The three-letter word recent grads should consider.
Choosing a career is probably one of the hardest decisions we’ll make. I remember having such a hard time with that decision. Growing up, the other children in school around me seemed to know exactly what they wanted to do. Go to law school, be a pediatrician, a veterinarian, a police officer. I had no idea, and believe it or not, I stressed about it ALL the time when I was in middle school. Don’t ask me why I decided to make that my focus in middle school. I know that sounds funny, but it’s true. At the time, I didn’t realize that I was weirdly obsessed with careers because focusing on careers would actually be my career! I had no idea that my profession (recruiter) even existed. Now I look back on those years of worry, and it all comes together for me. I wasn’t just a weird kid worried about adult things. I was actually focused on my destiny at a young age. That sounds a little better, right? Okay, whatever. I’m really trying to make myself feel a little better about not focusing on kid stuff in middle school.
Regardless of if you worried about your career as a kid, a college student, or later, it's a huge decision and it can be hard to figure out. If you’re not that person who was born knowing exactly what you want to do, don’t worry. You’re not alone. Most people don’t know what they want to do UNTIL THEY DO SOMETHING! That’s why the three-letter word I always suggest to recent graduates is YES! Saying yes to a job that isn’t quite your dream job is better than having no job at all and waiting for the perfect opportunity. You will be amazed by how much you learn about yourself. Your likes and dislikes will certainly be revealed. You will also discover your strengths and weaknesses. You encounter many different situations on a job, so you never know what you’ll face or have the opportunity to do that will teach you something significant about yourself and lead you to the career that is perfect for you. Saying YES is the beginning of the journey! Get rid of the permanent mentality. Just because you start in that job, doesn’t mean that’s where you’ll end up. It might actually be the job that propels you to the next job by helping you learn more about yourself! Just do something!
